This compact meter measures the electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids and the salts present in soil samples. It measures these by passing an electric current through a sample and measuring the conductivity. This gives an indication of the total dissolved solids which has a direct connection to the salts dissolved in the sample.

The dissolved salts in a particular soil can drastically influence the quality, health and yield of crops and can even kill plants if in high enough quantities. Sensitive plants such as those grown in greenhouses are especially susceptible to dissolved salts in soil. Causes of this condition can be from excessive fertilization, run off, poor drainage, under watering and from salt water intrusion.
