High levels of dissolved salts in soil can dramatically reduce plant health, size and yield. This can be caused by excessive fertilization, insufficient watering, poor drainage or by intrusion of salt water. Sensitive plants such as greenhouse grown crops are especially sensitive to soluble salts and can be damaged if levels exceed 2000ppm.

The level of soluble salt in a soil sample can be determined through a conductivity reading. The capacity of a solution to conduct an electric current is directly related to the total ionic concentration of dissolved substances in the solution.

Therefore, the conductivity reading of a soil extract can be converted into a reading of the total dissolved salts, which indicates combined levels of sulfates, chlorides and other salts present.

This meter is designed to measure total dissolved salts as well as the temperature of the solution. It comes complete with an electrode and temperature probe, a carrying case and features a wide testing range from 0.0 to 200ppt. This encompasses safe TDS ranges as well as dangerously high ranges.
