This dual scale salinity refractometer is used to measure, monitor and control the concentration of salt water and brine, especially useful for aquarium and marine applications.

This high quality refractometer measures on 2 scales, Specific Gravity (D 20/20) and parts per thousand (‰) and replaces your poor quality and difficult to read hydrometer. With just a couple of drops of aquarium water you know exactly what your salinity is.

Natural seawater has a specific gravity of about 1.025 however different oceans have slightly different specific gravities largely due to rainfall. The tropical Indo-Pacific has an average specific gravity of 1.022 - 1.025. The Caribbean has an average specific gravity of 1.023 - 1.026. The Red Sea has an average specific gravity of 1.028 - 1.035. The purpose of this refractometer is to allow you to monitor your aquariums sea water and keep it as close to natural seawater as possible.

This refractometer also features ATC which allows an automatic temperature compensation of your readings. Temperature is the single most important factor influencing refractometer readings and is one of the largest sources of measurement error. With built in ATC this device automatically corrects and compensates for this error when ambient temperature varies from the standard temperature of 68°F (20°C) anywhere between 50°F to 86°F (10°C to 30°C).

This refractometer also has a range of other uses such as:

  • If you grow your own fruit and vegetables to produce homemade pickles or to freeze, this refractometer will give you the information that you need to ensure your end products' quality.
  • Vital if you need to check salt levels when preparing sea food and other ocean by-products.
  • Essential piece of equipment used in research and clinical laboratories for checking and maintaining stock solutions and dilutions.
  • Vital for anyone in the field of Oceanography, research and clinical laboratories and the marine industry

Instructions for use:

  • To take a reading, place a few drops of a sample liquid on the measurement prism.
  • Ensure that enough solution is added to the prism in order to cover the entire prism.
  • Close the prism so that the liquid spreads across the entire surface of the prism without air bubbles or dry spots.
  • While holding the instrument under a light source, look through the eyepiece.
  • The salinity concentration is determined by the intersection of the boundary of the light and dark fields (known as the shadowline) on the printed scale. The left side of the scale indicates the specific gravity and the right side parts per thousand.
  • If the scale appears out of focus, the eyepiece may be adjusted by rotating the knurled portion. Under normal conditions, optimal contrast is obtained by holding the instrument underneath and perpendicular to a light source.
  • Once a reading has been taken, wipe dry with a clean cloth (do not wash or rinse) and place the instrument in the supplied plastic case. Store the instrument in a safe, dry environment.
