A refractometer is widely used in the food production industry and is becoming increasingly popular in the beer making process as it provides a quick and easy way to determine the specific gravity before and after the fermentation process. They are useful in maple syrup, honey and sugar production for the quick brix, or sugar content, reading.

Another use is for measurement of industrial cutting oils and liquids. Refractometers have evolved from a simple analog prism to a highly accurate electronic device capable of wide scales of the refractive index, brix or specific gravity. Conversion of one measurement scale to another is a simple calculation of a conversion factor.

This refractometer is specifically designed to test maple syrup through the entire production process. Maple syrup is essentially highly concentrated sucrose and water. It is obtained as sap from maple trees and then boiled down condensing the sugar until it reaches 65 to 68% sucrose.

The Brix scale of 0 to 85% is ideal for measuring syrup from sap all the way to syrup and then some. Traditional maple syrup producers have relied on hydrometers and thermometers to test the sugar content of syrup. These techniques can be inaccurate and easy swayed, which is why more and more producers are turning to refractometers for their ease of use and highly accurate readings.

This device was designed to accept hot samples and features automatic temperature compensation to give the most accurate readings possible in a wider temperature range. With a water resistant design which can be rinsed again and again.
