DC Power Supplies

DC power supplies typically transform regular alternating current into a smooth, usable direct current. This is achieved through a transformer which changes alternating current into a pulsating direct current. The current then flows through a series of “filters” comprised mostly of resistors and capacitors. This removes most of the pulsation and makes for a smoother direct current which can then be regulated into the exact magnitude needed for a specific DC device.

A DC power supply is found in applications such as welding, powering certain computer components and charging batteries. Every DC powered device needs a DC power supply, the question is at what voltage and amperage. Power supplies usually employ a way of regulating the current and voltage to exactly what is needed for a particular application. Digital and analog versions are available and have become extremely precise in modern DC power supplies.
