Lighting is of the utmost importance when it comes to growing healthy plants. Without steady, bright and appropriate light plants wouldn’t grow, produce or reproduce. Grow lighting comes in many forms, often depending on the type of plant or the stage of the plants growth.
The different kinds of lighting include high pressure sodium bulbs, metal halide bulbs, fluorescent bulbs and L.E.D. lighting. The wavelength and intensity of the light determines the impact it has on the plant. For example, “grow” bulbs have a blue kind of light (5400k), while “bloom” bulbs are more of a red light (2800k). Grow bulbs are good for promoting growth of the plant while bloom bulbs promote flowering and budding.
Simply lighting a bulb over a plant can be inefficient and ineffective without additional components such as reflectors, cooling systems and electronic ballasts. Ballasts help to smooth out the light by increasing the frequency of light to more closely replicate sunlight while increasing the life of the bulb. Reflectors concentrate the light and eliminate “wasted” light. Cooling systems help to cool bulbs to increase the lifespan of the bulb and dampen dangerous temperatures.
