The AgTec Geocell, also known as a cellular confinement system, is a three-dimensional geosynthetic material that is designed to provide structural support, stabilization and erosion control to the base layers of soil, sand, gravel, and rock. By filling the Geocell with an appropriate aggregate, it offers excellent lateral strength and retention that prevents material from shifting sideways and eroding under heavy or repetitive traffic. The product also helps distribute the weight applied over a larger area, reducing weather erosion.
Ideal for roads, driveways, trails, slopes, and embankments, the Geocell has a high tensile strength and features a rhomboidal indentation texture (1.5+/-0.1mm) that creates friction and keeps the fill in place. Additionally, the perforation pattern allows water to move freely through the product, preventing the material from washing out and improving the structural integrity of the ground.
To enhance separation, reinforcement, and weed control, we recommend using a non-woven or woven geotextile underneath the Geocell.
Geocells are highly beneficial for farms as they offer numerous advantages such as managing mud, providing support to tractors and heavy machinery, preventing costly erosion in livestock areas and trails, reinforcing farm buildings like barns and stables, and providing a solid and dry surface for animals, vehicles, and people to move around on.
Agtec Geocell is manufactured under a quality management system that is ISO-9001:2008 CE certified, ensuring reliable and consistent performance.
Which depth of Geocell to use?
Choosing the correct depth of Geocell’s is important and depends on several factors including the load requirements, soil conditions, and slope angles. Here is some general recommendations:
- 2" Geocells: Suitable for light traffic areas, such as walkways, light use driveways, and flat landscape installations.
- 3" Geocells: Ideal for medium traffic areas, such as driveways, walkways, trails, foundations, paver bases, grass parking, and playgrounds.
- 4" Geocells: Recommended for standard traffic areas, including most driveways, farm animal areas, barn and shed foundations, gravel roads, parking areas, trails, and slope erosion control.
- 6" Geocells: Designed for heavy traffic areas, such as road base reinforcement, heavy traffic gravel roads, building base reinforcement, heavy equipment parking, airport runway and taxiway, railways and steep slope erosion control.
- 8” Geocells: For really heavy duty industrial applications such as heavy-duty access roads, industrial yards, haul roads, railways, military installations and landfills.
Which Geotextile to use?
Using a geotextile underneath the geocell is strongly recommended as it provides several benefits, including separation, reinforcement, stability, and erosion control. The appropriate thickness of the geotextile depends on the depth of the geocell, as larger depths require thicker geotextiles to support the corresponding load. By preventing aggregate sinking and strengthening the entire installation, it ensures long-term stability. Additionally, it helps control weed growth. Our company offers both woven and non-woven geotextiles to suit your specific needs.
Woven geotextiles are known for their strength and ability to restrict weed growth. They are effective in slowing down water flow, which can help prevent erosion from occurring below them. On the other hand, non-woven geotextiles are more suitable for situations where fast water flow is necessary. They excel at filtering aggregates and preventing them from passing through the fabric.
Choosing the appropriate geotextile for your geocell installation is crucial to ensuring its long-term stability and performance.
Here is our general guide to which of our geotextiles to use:
- For 2" and 3" Geocells, we recommend using a 3.2oz non-woven or 3oz woven geotextile.
- For 4" Geocells, we recommend using a 3.2oz woven or 4.5oz non-woven geotextile.
- For 6" Geocells, we recommend using a 6oz or 8oz non-woven geotextile.
- For 8" Geocells, we recommend using a 6oz or 8oz non-woven geotextile.
Which aggregate to use in the Geocell?
For installations with traffic, it is strongly advised to use compacting gravel as fill to ensure a sturdy and stable installation. We recommend using compacting 3/8" - 3/4" gravel, ideally not pea gravel or any rounded fill, to ensure a durable and long-lasting foundation. While geocells can be used to support and prevent erosion of other aggregates such as soil, sand, stone, and crushed rock, it is important to use the appropriate type of fill for areas with traffic to avoid sinking and deformation over time.
