Gloss Meters and Coating Testers
Gloss, paint and combinations of coatings play a huge role in the prevention of corrosion and decay in many different materials. These coatings have to be a certain thickness to be the most efficient and coating testers determine that through the use of magnetic induction and eddy current measurements.
Gloss Meters are designed to measure the light reflected off from a particular surface. This value is measured in Gloss Units (GU) which is the scale of measuring gloss. Gloss meters are a great indication of the quality of paint or gloss coatings. A poor quality gloss reading can indicate premature flaking, cracking or bubbling of coatings. These can drastically shorten the lifespan of the equipment or vehicle being coated.
Many people find the gloss of a coat of paint as important as the color especially in automobiles, boats and motorcycles. High quality glossy coatings have an extremely smooth surface and are better at preventing water, salt and dust damage to a vehicle. A poor quality glossy coating will have microscopic pockets and imperfections which can trap water, dust and grime, shortening the life of the coating.
