Agtec's SRM Red Plastic Mulch is designed to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture with the added benefit of better harvests.
Selective Reflective Mulch (SRM) was developed by the USDA and Clemson University to enhance tomato yields. This solid red mulch increases the reflection of far-red light, which triggers a color sensitive protein within the plant, and has been shown to improve early tomato yields by up to 20% and grow bigger strawberries. Research has also found that red mulch reduces nematode damage.
Strong enough for double cropping in the same season, or possibly for use over two seasons, and is easy to remove from the field after harvest. Average soil warming is 4–6°F.
Installation Tips:
- Prepare soil well so that it is smooth and friable
- Do not lay plastic on dry soil
- Plastic should be in close contact with the soil for maximum heat transfer into the soil
- Be sure the edges of the plastic are well secured with soil
- Not recommended for southern states due to soil warming properties
Crops that are suited for red mulch:
- Vegetables - Tomatoes, peppers, melons
- Small fruits - Strawberries in annual hill system
- Cut flowers (Because of variation among species of flowers, on-farm trials should be made.)
